Hundreds of women share stories of sexual assault in response to Donald Trump’s disgusting words

After explicit footage leaked of Donald Trump bragging that he could grab women “by the pussy” because of his wealth and fame, women on Twitter are sharing stories of their own sexual assaults. In doing so, they’re shining a light on the pervasiveness of rape culture and showing the world they’re more than just a statistic.

Canadian author Kelly Oxford sent out a tweet last night sharing the first time she was sexually assaulted and asked that other women reply with their stories too.

The responses were a lot faster and more plentiful than Oxford anticipated.

Women told of instances of sexual assault that occurred when they were just children and teens.

There are countless others and that’s because nearly every woman can tell a story like this about the first time a man decided their body wasn’t their own. Every single one.

The reason these stories are so important to share is that Trump tried minimizing and excusing his comments as “locker room banter” rather than what they actually are — sexual assault. In the 2005 recording he can be heard saying, “I just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything … Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”

His words are repulsive but sadly, not at all shocking to anyone who’s paid the slightest bit of attention to this election. Trump routinely speaks of women in sexist and abrasive terms, even tweeting insults at former Miss Universe Alicia Machado in the early hours of the morning as recently as last week. His vitriol toward women and complete disrespect for them is obvious the moment he opens his mouth. The filth in this recording is just more confirmation that he’s a deplorable person not fit to serve.

By the end of the night, Oxford tweeted that a million women had shared their stories saying she’s in “horrendous shock” yet, “so proud” of the women speaking out.

As of this morning, Oxford says she’s still getting stories sent at the rate of 50 per minute. Anyone who thinks rape culture isn’t real simply isn’t paying attention. And anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to vote for a man for president who boasts of sexually assaulting women needs to do some serious soul-searching.
