Montana teen stages protest after school demands she wear a bra

Imagine a world where female teachers went to principals to complain that they could see the outline of penises through certain types of clothing, it was making them uncomfortable, and hence boys should be made to wear jock straps every day. You can’t imagine it, because it would never happen. Because that’s creepy as hell.

But how about a story where a teenager was told to cover up for not wearing a bra? That doesn’t seem so outlandish, does it? You can probably completely imagine that happening and may not even have a problem with it. Why?

A Montana teen was sent to the vice principal’s office and was told that a male teacher had complained he was “uncomfortable” because she wasn’t wearing a bra. “I was told to find something to cover up with,” 18-year-old Kaitlyn Juvik told People.  She was wearing nipple stickers beneath a dark and loose off-the-shoulder T-shirt. Kaitlyn’s mom told People, “The school has bigger fish to fry than whether my daughter is wearing a bra. I’m proud of Kaitlyn for standing up for herself and opening the door to start a discussion about the body shaming and sexualizing of women.”

Principal Steve Thennis seemed to confirm Kaitlyn’s story by telling KTVH that someone at the school was uncomfortable with how she was dressed, so she was told to cover up. “I’m not going to check student’s undergarments,” Thennis told KTVH. “We are going to ask them to dress appropriately and if we feel it is inappropriate, male or female, we are going to ask them to cover up.”

Female students decided to leave their bras at home in support of Kaitlyn. Why? Because we all know this is some sexist b.s. Maybe teachers should focus on teaching, instead of whether one of their female students’ boobs are supported well enough. She was wearing a black, loose fitting t-shirt and nipple stickers — so the dreaded nipple wasn’t even showing.

Here is a screen shot of a post of her outfit that has since been removed, because trolls:

Fellow students stepped up to support Kaitlyn for being harassed by the school. Kaitlyn told People “300 female Helena High students went braless to school on May 27 in protest, joined by several male students who wore bras.” They also started the Facebook page, No Bra, No Problem.

Good for them. It’s about time we stop tolerating the message that what women wear is “distracting” to men. Creepy, ogling men are distracting to us, too — but we don’t get to pluck out their eyes. Okay, maybe that’s an unfair comparison, but women are sick as hell of dealing with this. Kudos to young girls standing up for themselves and refusing to be body-shamed.
